Art Inspiration, Discussion & Appreciation

The Resurrection by Matthias Grunewald (1512- 1516)
What we learned-
This painting was another panel from the Isenheim Altarpiece (from which we previously studied The Crucifixion).
The tomb featured in the painting is consistent with a tomb used in the early 1500’s- not Jesus’ time- and is thus an anachronism in the work.
This is yet another work we’ve studied which portrays people having a divine vision/ experience and fainting/ falling down from the intensity of it.  (Do you remember what the other works were?)
Discussion Questions:
What are the marks on Jesus’ hands and feet?
How does Grunewald use contrast (utilizing opposites, like dark and light) to make a point?
How do you think the guard Grunewald portrays felt?
